Roadmap Update June 2020
Looking back at the month of June, you’re probably asking yourself, what could the crew at Studio 397 announce after a month with so many highlights? It’s exactly what we asked ourselves as well. We started the month building up towards what would become the biggest sim racing esports event ever, with millions of people watching the 24 hours of Le Mans Virtual on televisions and streams worldwide. Steam Summer Sale 2020
Summer is here! And with it, everything we love. Warm weather, BBQ instead of a standard dinner (unless that is your standard way of doing things!) , the summer sun is shining bright. But of course the number one reason to ignore all of these things is…..The Steam Summer Sale! If summer is the “ice cream” you enjoy the most (bear with us while we wear out this metaphor) our discounted DLC packs will be your favorite topping, a perfect accompaniment to the BBQ-evening chillaxin’ in the sunset, part of the fond memories you’ll have to l...

Without the help of those passionate people from our partners like ACO, WEC, FIA, Motor...
The Flare Path: A2Z
A is for Alphabetised wargame and sim news. Every four weeks or so I hang up a streamer of industrial strength fly paper in The Flare Path water closet and see what wargame and simulation news items stick to it. Below is this month’s bag – 25 stories, most of which involve virtual vehicles and surrogate slaughter. If you’ve visited a transport museum or heritage railway in the past twelve months, or can put these battles – Tsushima, Thermopylae, Trenton – in chronological order, you probably won’t regret clicking where i...
24-hour endurance race Le Mans has gone online
Of all the sports put on hold during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, motorsports have gotten off rather lightly. Between existing “sim-racing” scenes and the relative ease of plugging a steering wheel into a PC, even a calendar event like Le Mans 24 can find new life over the internet. The 24-hour endurance race kicked off in rFactor 2 this afternoon, giving esports drivers a shot at knocking their real-world contemporaries down a peg on the gruelling digital tarmac (more…)

Audi have fired a Formula E driver for using a ringer in an esports race
Yesterday, I reported that Audi driver Daniel Abt had been suspended from his Formula E team, after getting someone else to race for him in a charity esports event. Well, now he’s been straight up fired by Audi because of the incident. Last night, he posted a 14-minute video explaining the situation. Abt said that the reason he got pro sim racer, Lorenz Hoerzing, to drive for him was because they wanted to “create a funny story for the fans.” (more…)
Formula E driver disqualified after getting an imposter to race for him in a charity event
Seeing as real-life racing has been suspended due the Covid-19 pandemic, Formula E started its very own series of virtual races in rFactor 2 to keep up the racing season online. The Race At Home Challenge features actual Formula E drivers as well as esports players, competing together to keep fans entertained and raise money for Unicef. But alas, one driver went ahead and tried to cheat the system, getting an imposter to drive in his place at this weekend’s event. (more…)
Audi suspends Formula E driver for bizarre sim racing imposter incident
Daniel Abt, the German racing driver who's become a fixture on the Formula E grid since the series' inception in 2014, has seemingly lost his drive with Audi Sport after a bizarre series of events during this weekend's Race at Home Challenge esports series. During this weekend's race, where many of the real-world drivers took to rFactor 2 to compete in an event backed by Formula E's organisers, it became increasingly apparent that Abt had employed a ringer to drive in his place. Suspicions emerged when Abt became much more competitive than he h...
Release of Build 1118 and the Berlin E-Prix Track
Yes, it’s still a bit too early for our monthly roadmap, but it is about time to announce Build 1118, which comes around two and a half months after our previous update. Why did it take so long, you might ask? Because we needed to take some time to complete some bigger tasks, such as overhauling our package management system, deploying the first step of our graphics improvements and integrating our brand new broadcast overlays. The weather along the Dutch coastline this weekend was rather typical for May. The sun and clouds both fight for attention. Trying to make their presence felt to the people on the beaches below. But this was not supposed to be a normal weekend. An enormous amount of people would have flooded the area, cheering for their favorite driver, enjoying the fast cars that would have graced the beautiful track of Zandvoort. Then everything changed. What could not continue in the real world, most certainly can in the virtual world. We therefore decided t...
Roadmap Update - April 2020
This evening, after another extremely busy and exciting day at the virtual office, I had dinner, walked my dog, and finally sat down behind my desk. I put on some music to start writing the roadmap update for this month. It's a bit different from our regular ones... KartSim esports update
Nearly all of our current motorsport stars have one thing in common when it comes to their career, they all started their path of racing in little karts battling for every centimeter while throwing it sideways into the next turn. This is probably the purest and, if you listened to interviews of these stars, the most thrilling form of motorsport. Unfortunately, even that joy has been taken away from us in the current situation but thanks to KartSim and the #StayHomeStayKarting initiative, there is something amazing coming up! Read the full post ...
The Flare Path: A2Z
A is for Alphabetised wargame and sim news. Every four weeks or so I hang up a streamer of industrial strength fly paper in The Flare Path water closet and see what wargame and simulation news items stick to it. Below is this month’s bag – 25 stories involving virtual vehicles and surrogate slaughter. If you’ve visited a transport museum or heritage railway in the past twelve months, or can put these battles – Bunker Hill, Bataan, Borodino – in chronological order, you probably won’t regret clicking where it ...
Roadmap Update March 2020
This is probably one of the tougher roadmap intros to write. On the one hand we would love to go on and on about the growth we are seeing in simracing. How amazing it feels to see simracing on TV and being talked about everywhere. On the other hand we all know where the growth is coming from, the absence of our beloved motorsport, and why this is. So let us start with saying that we hope everyone out there stays safe and healthy. It’s important in these days to keep calm and try everything to help the world to get through this. Read our full ...
Roadmap Update February 2020
This year, February gifted us 29 days to work on the roadmap, but look at us, we did it in 28! It was a busy month nonetheless and once again, we are happy to show what’s new in your favourite sim. As you probably all saw already, we released a patch with the new HAM feature for VR but it obviously isn’t the only “newcomer” to rFactor 2. In this months roadmap you will find something from basically every part of the game, overlays for the broadcast of your favourite league, updated textures for our content and also code improvements her...
Build 1117 and Content Updates
As part of our recent promise to put out updates more quickly, here's another one! This week we have a handful of updates to both the new UI as well as graphics and physics content updates. Code fixes includes a fix for some micro stuttering some people were experiencing (especially in VR) as well as a memory leak in the showroom. We also added network settings to the new UI so you can configure your available bandwidth. Content fixes include physics updates to the BMW M2, and graphics updates to the classic McLaren M23, MP4/8 and MP4/13 open w...
Build 1117 Update and new UI improvements
The first update of the new UI public beta is here! Although it’s taken a bit longer than anticipated, we’ve addressed a lot of issues as you can see from the changelog below. We held off on this release for a bit longer than we anticipated, as we felt we had to get a number of problems fixed in this next update. Going forward we anticipate we can get roughly two updates per month done for the new UI, with smaller fixes and added features, and also addressing a few other issues in every new build. Below the changelog below we’ve added som...

Content Updates!
It’s Friday everyone! Not yet ‘Black’ Friday, and not yet Roadmap time… But hey, never a wrong Friday to get some spontaneous rFactor 2 content updates! We’ve added the three new layouts we promised for the Nürburgring: ‘Sprint’ is a short version of the GP layout, it detours the Ford, Dunlop and Audi curves, and instead swoops back quickly transitions into the Michelin curve. 'Sprint No Chicane', same as the ‘Sprint Short’ version but with a more flowing last sector. The chicane is replaced with a more flowing S style turn t...
Welcome to the Ring!
Located in the Eifel region of Germany, the Nürburgring can easily be described as one of the most – if not the most – iconic race locations on the entire globe. Built right into the trees and the ups and downs of this lovely countryside, the Nürburgring offers a challenge even to the absolute best of the racing world. The two circuits, Nordschleife and Nürburgring GP, have seen the greatest of motorsport over the years, but they are also places for amateur drivers from all over the world to get their dose of track driving and to follow ...

Build 1114 released, multiplayer fixes, faster loading!
Releasing a new rFactor 2 build is typically something we do with a classic bulleted changelog, but this time we felt it deserved a bit more than that. During our recent rF24 event, technical issues cropped up that left us no alternative but to red flag the race. We decided to immediately regroup and redirect our priorities towards dissecting and fixing what turned out to be long standing issues. Read all about the new build here: https://www.studio-397.com/2019/08/build-1114/

This month we released the much anticipated performance upgrades. Judging from the feedback we got, build 1110 has provided most, if not all people a significant improvement. Release Of Build 1110 - Performance Improvements!
It’s live! In the last couple of roadmap updates, we’ve made it no secret that we have been working hard on a set of performance upgrades. We’ve taken our time to get it right and took advantage of the DirectX 11 API as much as possible. Our focus was on performance, while keeping the actual look of the game the same. All of this centers around a concept called “frame time”, which is the time it takes to completely render a single frame to your screen(s). Obviously we want that time to be as low as possible, but we also want it to be ...

Roadmap Update October 2017
We’re nearing the end of the year, which is a good time to start looking ahead at what the new year will bring, but also to look back and reflect on the current year. At the start of 2017 we were still building our team and roadmap, and I think it is fair to say that we did not anticipate all the interesting conversations, partnerships and opportunities that presented themselves in the months that followed. Even though, we knew when we started that there were a few key areas in rFactor 2 we had to address. To read the rest of the story, go he...

Roadmap update June 2017
Welcome back to another monthly update. I’m sure many of you have watched the 24 hours of Le Mans over the weekend. What an exciting race that was, and good news for us as although they did set a new fastest lap time in qualification, they did not break the record for the most number of laps driven in the race, so we can continue as Studio 397 for another year! We are heavy in development currently in all areas and looking forward to bring you several updates over the next few months and beyond. Read all about it here: https://www.studio-397....

Roadmap Update March 2017
Spring is in the air and we’re pleased with our progress over the past few months. We have a lot to share with you. We decided to take the time to really bring together all of the newly developed elements – UI, VR, and DX11. Although this puts us slightly behind our targeted “end of Q1” release date, we promise you it will be worth the wait. In addition, we wanted to make sure that modders and leagues have enough time to update their content so it shines in the new engine. With all of this in mind, we’re targeting a release date of Ma...

Stock Car Guide Part 1: The Full-Course Caution
As novice stock car simracers quickly realize, oval racing isn’t just about turning left, it consists of a complex interplay of many intricate parts! As a genre, stock car is highly dependent on a unique set of “rules” that must be implemented to properly simulate the strategy and “controlled chaos” that make oval racing exciting. Key elements like full-course cautions, special penalties like EOLLs, and rewards such as the “Lucky Dog” and “Wave Around”, are all very specific to stock car racing – and rFactor 2 simulates all ...

Build 1108 Update 1
After releasing build 1108 about a week ago, we got a lot of good feedback from the community and also some bug reports. As always, we very much appreciate your input, even though we cannot always respond to every report individually. We previously explained that we spent some time optimizing our development process, so it should come as no surprise that we’re releasing this update now. This is not the last bugfix we will do, but it is probably the last one we’ll do this year. So from Studio 397, we wish you all a happy new year! Changes: A...

The Flare Path Grand Prix
Vaguely aware that we’re living in a race sim golden age? Not sure which of the ‘Big Six’ you should invest your precious time and money in? Me too! Hopefully, by the time the inaugural Flare Path GP is over (Oct 14) little of that bewilderment will remain. Guided by the preferences and observations of that section of the RPS community that knows and loves realistic Cars Wot Go Fast games, it shouldn’t be hard to find a high-quality race sim that suits you and me to a GT. …

A good amount of cutting false positives have been addressed, as well as the pit entry glitch on the 2014 layout. Cam bu...
