Assetto Corsa Rally — Full breakdown of update 0.4
Assetto Corsa Rally — Full breakdown of update 0.4
The Supernova development team has announced the arrival of update 0.4 for Assetto Corsa Rally, scheduled for 30th April. A substantial update that brings new content, new weather conditions, a significant official partnership, and a long list of fixes and improvements that make the off-road driving experience richer, more realistic, and more communicative than ever before.
Two 1990s icons: opposing philosophies, the same passion
At the heart of the new content are two legendary cars from the nineties, chosen not only for their historical significance, but because they embody two radically different approaches to rally: front-wheel drive versus all-wheel drive, tarmac versus gravel and snow, surgical precision versus raw power.
The Peugeot 306 Maxi Kit Car is one of the most remarkable achievements in late-90s rally engineering. Homologated in 1997 and made famous by drivers such as François Delecour, this car evolved from the earlier 306 S16 with significant technical upgrades specifically designed for tarmac competition within the FIA 2-Litre World Rally Cup. In Assetto Corsa Rally it is represented in IKE Racing livery. The 306 Maxi belongs to the Kit Car category — a class that championed naturally aspirated engines, front-wheel-drive chassis, and extreme lightness optimised for asphalt, at a time when World Rally Cars dominated gravel and mud. The result was a car capable of beating far more expensive four-wheel-drive rivals on its chosen terrain. Its performances were so far above expectations that the Kit Car category was ultimately banned from top-tier international competitions — a testament to how thoroughly this machine upset the established order. With a high-revving naturally aspirated engine and front-wheel drive, the 306 Maxi demands absolute precision, total commitment, and a deep understanding of the car: the very essence of tarmac rally.
The Subaru Impreza S3 Group A of 1993 is the car that ignited one of the most beloved legends in WRC history. Driven by Colin McRae and Carlos Sainz during the most glorious period of their careers, this Impreza marked Subaru's decisive entry into the World Rally Championship, replacing the larger Legacy RS with a more agile and technically refined machine. It was with this very car that Colin McRae claimed the Drivers' World Championship in 1995, becoming at the time the youngest champion in history. Subaru also secured the Manufacturers' titles in 1995 and 1996. The version simulated in Assetto Corsa Rally is the iconic 1993 specification, in which McRae wrote the first chapters of the legend. Boxer engine, all-wheel drive, and the character of a true rally beast: the Impreza is ready to attack gravel and snow with the same determination McRae brought to every stage. These two cars represent completely opposing philosophies: the 306 Maxi demands finesse on tarmac, while the Impreza wants to be pushed hard on every loose surface.
Winter arrives in Alsace and Wales
One of the most eagerly awaited additions concerns the expansion of winter conditions. Supernova has applied its snow technology to the Alsace and Wales rallies, allowing players to rediscover these roads in an entirely new guise, with fresh challenges tied to reduced grip and trajectory management on snow. It is worth noting that snow-specific tyres for Alsace and Wales will arrive in a future update. Mixed weather condition events are also being added within the FWD, RWD, and 4WD traction groups, for an even more varied and unpredictable challenge.
Partnership with Jon Armstrong: physics gets closer to reality
One of the most significant announcements in this update is the official collaboration with Jon Armstrong, WRC rally driver at M-Sport. Started in March, this partnership brings to Assetto Corsa Rally the direct experience of a professional driver who is equally at home in sim racing and top-level competition. Thanks to Armstrong's feedback and direction, the team has worked in a targeted manner on tyres, aerodynamics, and suspension, with the aim of making car behaviour smoother and more communicative. The focus has been placed on three crucial phases of driving: wheel lock-up, loss of traction, and pushing the car to its performance limits. These are precisely the moments, according to Armstrong, that define the quality of a rally experience and that separate a mediocre simulation from a truly engrossing one. The result is a more natural and intuitive handling of driving dynamics, capable of better conveying the information coming from the road surface.
Physics: tyres, snow, and aerodynamics thoroughly revised
Update 0.4 brings a substantial revision of the physics model, particularly regarding tyre behaviour on wet and snowy surfaces. The way wet and snowy conditions affect tyre forces has been completely reworked: these conditions no longer reduce cornering stiffness, and the S-shaped curve is effectively cut off when grip is saturated. In the case of snow, an additional experimental deformation component has been added to the slip angle, which grows proportionally to how suited the tyre is to snow driving, simulating the tyre physically gripping the underlying surface. The overall result is a more immediate and noticeable transition between grip and loss of control, improving both responsiveness in the wet and controllability on snow. The parameters related to tyre dynamic masses and damping have been fine-tuned for more consistent force delivery, and gravel tyres have gained the ability to grip on snow, making them suitable for snowy gravel roads. Aerodynamics have also been revised, with adjustments to both drag and downforce. Several vehicle setups and presets have been updated to improve handling or to better reflect the latest tyre changes. Regarding the Peugeot 306, brake bias adjustment has been made available for the first time via a pressure limiter valve — a solution that allows the driver to reduce rear brake pressure without increasing front pressure, despite the car having a dual master cylinder setup.
Force Feedback and peripherals: broader support
The update brings a long-awaited addition for users of high-end hardware: the implementation of the Fanatec FullForce and Logitech TrueForce protocols, with a new in-game FFB parameter that players can tune to their own preference. Generic device compatibility has also been improved, enabling a wider range of peripherals to work correctly without requiring special configuration.
Audio: the new cars find their voice
Both new cars arrive with their own dedicated audio sets. The Subaru Impreza engine and exhaust have been carefully implemented, and the team has already committed to further improvements in the future — the audio designer responsible is a passionate Impreza owner and wants the sound to be perfect. The Peugeot 306 Maxi engine and exhaust are also available from day one. Additional improvements cover the Skoda exhaust with after-fire, the Rally2 turbo for the Skoda, gravel skid feedback, third-person spatialization for replays, rear-engine vehicles, and forced induction cars. Several audio bugs have been fixed, including the premature cut-off of the wastegate blow-off valve sound and excessive hill reverberation perceived from inside the cockpit.
Gameplay, UI, and pacenote corrections
Pacenotes for Monte Carlo Bollene and Monte Carlo Sisteron have been updated. An error in the Wales Hafren North 3/6 notes has been corrected, and the stop marshals at the final sections of Monte-Carlo Bollene and Monte-Carlo Sisteron now correctly guide the player to the stop point. Respawn collision issues near Monte-Carlo Bollene's walls have been resolved. Automatic tyre allocation during rally weekends now works correctly, avoiding situations with an odd number of tyres or incorrect compound selections. An Apply button has been added in the Video options, and various text and translation issues have been corrected.
Environments and visuals: more detail, fewer bugs
Snow support has been introduced for Alsace and Wales, covering both road textures and off-road surface materials. Road and trajectory readability in snowy conditions has been improved across all stages, as have transitions between dry and fully snowy ground, and between fresh and melting snow. Snow particle effects on asphalt and vehicle ambient occlusion have been improved. Several stages have received updates to their rally event dressing: Monte Carlo Sisteron, Alsace Munster, Alsace Saverne, Wales Hafren South, and Wales Hafren North. New parked vehicles with chassis shadows have been added, and floating vegetation bugs present across all stages have been corrected.
Conclusion
Update 0.4 for Assetto Corsa Rally presents itself as one of the most complete and ambitious since the game's release. Two iconic cars with radically different characters, the winter expansion of two existing rallies, an official partnership with a professional WRC driver, deep improvements to tyre physics, and a long list of fixes demonstrate the clear and ambitious direction of the Supernova team. Simulated rallying in Assetto Corsa Rally continues to grow richer, more authentic, and more engaging with every release.
