Assetto Corsa vs Assetto Corsa EVO: The Evolution of Driving Simulation with the Ferrari F2004 at Spa-Francorchamps
Assetto Corsa vs Assetto Corsa EVO: The Evolution of Driving Simulation with the Ferrari F2004 at Spa-Francorchamps
Introduction: Two Generations Compared
In the landscape of driving simulators, Kunos Simulazioni has marked a decisive turning point with Assetto Corsa EVO, the direct successor to the iconic Assetto Corsa from 2014. This comparison analyzes the substantial differences between the two titles, using as a benchmark one of Formula 1's most legendary cars: the Ferrari F2004, tested on the mythical Spa-Francorchamps circuit.
The Graphics Engine: A Technological Revolution
Assetto Corsa: Solid Foundations
The original Assetto Corsa, while impressive for its time, had prioritized simulation over high-end graphics. The 2014 title used a proprietary engine that, although effective, now showed signs of age.
Assetto Corsa EVO: The Leap into the Future
Like its 2014 forebearer, Assetto Corsa EVO is being created via a photorealistic in-house game engine unlike 2018 spin-off Competizione which used Unreal Engine 4. One of the major innovations of Assetto Corsa EVO is the introduction of a new proprietary graphics engine, representing a remarkable leap forward graphically, with much more detailed simulation of effects related to day-night cycles, track reproduction, and weather.
Driving Physics: Precision and Realism
The Legacy of Assetto Corsa
Assetto Corsa had a highly regarded physics engine with detailed tire models and dynamic weather. However, its physics were general and not as refined for specific racing types.
The Evolution with EVO
Assetto Corsa EVO levels up AC's physics, improving the driving experience even more with better vehicle dynamics and handling, offering a balanced level of realism suitable for a variety of racing disciplines. Assetto Corsa EVO is touted by KUNOS as redefining asphalt simulation by featuring the most authentic road feel to date. They say they've developed an intricate mathematical model to meticulously simulate the feel of tarmac through your fingers, grip that's shaped dynamically via camber, track temperature, weather, and more.
Some of the advances made by AC EVO include: advanced suspension damping simulation and bump stop, tire simulation model for greater accuracy compared to real data, support for mechanical elements like anti-roll bars and wishbones.
The Ferrari F2004: A Direct Comparison
In Classic Assetto Corsa
The F2004 was added to the original Assetto Corsa in September 2017. When Kunos added the car, it transformed people's perceptions of driving in this era of Formula One cars. Driving the F2004 in the original Assetto Corsa in 2025 still feels fantastic, and surprisingly, if you remove all of the modern mods and addons that make Assetto Corsa look so good, the car is still a joy to drive.
In Assetto Corsa EVO
Added in the most recent update for Kunos' latest Assetto Corsa title, the F2004 sounds just as gorgeous as it always has, especially when viewed from external TV cameras and third-person camera angles. With the 0.3 update, Assetto Corsa EVO enriches its car fleet with nine new models, including the iconic Ferrari F2004.
However, some criticalities emerge: where the car falls down slightly is the actual driving experience. The F2004 was equipped with grooved Bridgestone tyres, a requirement of Formula One cars between 1998 and 2008. This means that the level of grip is not quite up to the standard of the 2010-era cars with full slick tyres.
Spa-Francorchamps: The Theater of Comparison
There are also new features on the circuit front: two legendary tracks make their entrance, Red Bull Ring and Spa Francorchamps, both reproduced with great care to offer an authentic motorsport experience. The Belgian circuit represents one of the most challenging tests for any simulator, with its elevation changes, fast corners, and variable weather conditions.
Distinctive Features
Content Variety
Assetto Corsa features a vast range of cars and tracks across various racing genres, benefiting from a strong modding community that continually adds new content. AC EVO aims to have the most comprehensive sim racing experience across a variety of cars. That means that GTs will be as important as road cars, or even formula racers and anything else added at a later date.
VR Support and Multiplayer
The question of whether Assetto Corsa EVO will support VR has already been answered by KUNOS. Yes, it will; the upcoming sim will support SteamVR, Oculus, and OpenXR virtual reality platforms from day one, and unlike its two predecessors VR implementation is being developed together with engineers from Nvidia and Epic Games to ensure smooth optimization.
With version 0.3 come the first online rooms for up to 16 players, with promises of future expansions. The development company has confirmed a strategic collaboration with SWISS and Simgrid, which will guarantee free servers active 24 hours a day.
Career Mode and Progression
KUNOS representatives have identified the lack of career mode in EVO's predecessors, so are keen to establish something worth striving for. EVO's career will be open-ended, giving total freedom in how players want to progress, earn their currency, and fill out their garage.
Conclusions: The Necessary Evolution
Assetto Corsa EVO is not the big brother of the first Assetto Corsa. After 19 years, it is undoubtedly the true and authentic evolution of the legendary netKar Pro from Kunos Simulazioni. With EVO, Kunos presents itself once again to its audience with all its passion for cars, for driving, for details, for the emotions that only being behind a properly simulated steering wheel can give.
Assetto Corsa EVO provides a modernized, balanced experience, bridging the gap between flexibility and realism. Each game has its strengths, catering to different types of sim racers, whether you prioritize diversity, deep simulation, or modern improvements.
The comparison between Assetto Corsa and Assetto Corsa EVO, using the Ferrari F2004 on Spa-Francorchamps as a test bench, highlights how the new iteration represents not just a graphical upgrade, but a true evolution in driving simulation, while maintaining the soul and philosophy that made the Kunos Simulazioni brand famous.
