Assetto Corsa PS4: Multiplayer Has Not Been Shut Down, Just a Temporary Technical Issue
Assetto Corsa PS4: Multiplayer Has Not Been Shut Down, Just a Temporary Technical Issue
False reports suggested the permanent closure of servers, but 505 Games confirms it was merely a malfunction
On July 22, 2025, the sim racing world was swept by a wave of concern when numerous players began reporting their inability to access Assetto Corsa's multiplayer functionality on PlayStation 4. Rumors quickly spread across social media and gaming forums, fueling speculation about the possible permanent shutdown of the beloved racing simulator's servers.
The Initial Situation
During testing conducted on July 22, the PlayStation 4 edition of the game was completely inaccessible regarding online racing. Players couldn't connect to multiplayer lobbies, causing panic in the community and leading many to believe that 505 Games had silently disabled online services without any prior warning.
This situation triggered a series of articles and social media posts that assumed the definitive closure of multiplayer functionality, especially considering the age of the PlayStation 4 console, launched nearly 12 years ago.
Official Denial
However, after directly contacting 505 Games, the publisher provided a categorical denial through an official spokesperson: "We can confirm that we haven't shut down multiplayer services/PS4 servers for Assetto Corsa. This was a temporary technical issue."
Confirmation also came through the game's official Discord channel, where developers published a clarifying statement on the morning of July 23: "Several articles are reporting that the Assetto Corsa PS4 lobbies have been intentionally shut down, but this is not true. We encountered a technical issue and we have been actively investigating and working to solve this in the shortest possible time."
Return to Normalcy
Fortunately, by the evening of July 22, services were completely restored. Players were once again able to browse through the lobby list and participate in multiplayer sessions, confirming that it was indeed a temporary malfunction rather than a permanent shutdown.
Reflections on Online Service Longevity
This episode nevertheless raises important questions about the long-term sustainability of online services for games on previous generation consoles. Assetto Corsa was ported to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2016, and considering the age of these platforms, it's inevitable that at some point the costs of maintaining online services could outweigh revenue from new game sales.
However, when and if that moment should arrive, one would expect at least an official warning or transparent communication to users, not a silent closure.
The Community Can Continue
For now, the vast Assetto Corsa community on PlayStation 4 can breathe a sigh of relief. Enthusiasts can continue organizing their drift meetups, Touristenfahrten sessions at the Nürburgring, and all other multiplayer activities that make this simulator so beloved by the sim racing community.
The episode serves as a reminder of the importance of always verifying information before spreading news that could cause unnecessary panic in the gaming community.
