No more bottlenecks: PCIe 7.0 rewrites the rules

The PCI-SIG consortium has officially released the PCIe 7.0 specification, marking another decisive step in the evolution of interconnection standards: base speed doubles from 64 GT/s (in PCIe 6.0) to 128 GT/s, equivalent to about 256 GB/s downstream on a x16 link without overhead 

 How do they do it?

• They maintain PAM4 modulation and the 256-byte FLIT from 6.0, but double the base clock frequency to double the bandwidth

• Security is enhanced with integrity data encryption and TDISP, useful in disaggregated data centers

• Support is added for optical connectivity (with optical-aware retimers), ideal for long-distance AI/cloud infrastructures

 Who really needs it?

• Primarily targeted at data centers, HPC, and AI accelerators, where transferring large volumes of data can eliminate bottlenecks

• For the average user or gamer, most applications won't even saturate PCIe 4.0: in reality, it's more about marketing than actual need.

 When will the products arrive?

• The compliance test is expected in 2027, while the first compatible platforms could arrive around 2028

• In short: we are nearing the final stage of the race, but actual availability is still a way off.
